String Quartet

Another semi – finish seems to have been a long time coming, but fear not I have every intention of adding some more to this blog in the next few months. This is ‘String Quartet’, a quilt heavily inspired by Jacquie Gering’s class sample for her latest Craftsy class, Next Steps with your Walking Foot shown here on her blog.

I made it from 25 inch finished blocks, putting the paper foundation together using greaseproof kitchen paper (cheap, very cheap and transparent – a huge bonus) with everyday masking tape, then laying it over my cutting mat and using the grid to keep it square to cut the foundations. The masking tape didn’t cause any problems when it came to sewing over it and removing the paper to finish and in the end it all went together really well.

It was never my intention to match the diagonal seams and in hindsight it might have been better to have that be more obvious rather than have it look like it was missed. All up I was really pleased with it and it’s been a great way to use some of my stash that’s been hanging around for a while (understatement ;-) ).

Marsala Triangles

Here it is! My Pantone Colour of the Year Quilt Challenge quilt top entry, measuring up at 62 inches by 45 inches.

I know I’m not alone in saying that my first reaction when I heard they had chosen Marsala as the colour of the year was one of horror and exclamations of ‘egad!’ and such like. I’m not totally swayed to the view that they’ve made the right choice but I have softened towards it.

The fabrics are ones I picked up at my local Textile Traders store at the last minute. I was considering entering and decided not to and then I read a blog post from Anne at Play Crafts a few weeks ago saying there was plenty of time, there’s a category for the top only, etcetera so… I went to Textile Traders  “to see what they had’. I came home with an armload of fabric that seemed to fit the bill, which I promptly washed, pressed and cut up.

There are a couple of firsts for me with this one – it’s my first on-line quilt challenge and my first time for making these equilateral triangles.

It went together pretty easily and I’m happy with the result, there’s no loss of points which is great.
